Spoon Carving with Hewn Spoons

  • The Common Knowledge Centre Kilfenora V95DK38 (map)

This 2-day course is a great introduction to spoon carving, giving you a solid foundation in green woodworking, in an inspirational setting. You will learn the fundamentals of axework, knifework and spoon design.

Who is this course for?

If you’ve dreamt of making your own useful objects around the house and love the idea of doing it solely with hand tools then this is the course for you. Take the weekend to learn how to safely use the right tools with the right materials to create utensils and other useful household objects in a beautiful, meditative way. You can also purchase this course as a gift here.

What will you learn?

The aim is to give you the knowledge to be able to go and carve spoons safely at home. And, of course, to have a fun weekend with a bunch of like-minded people! Doing the course over two days will allow us to cover the material in a more relaxed way and to perhaps go into more detail in certain areas.  All the raw materials and tools are provided and you will go home with a butter knife and a cooking spoon.

  • Wood selection, storage and preparation

  • About the materials, consumables and equipment used

  • Splitting and roughing out using an axe

  • Safe carving techniques, using the main knife grips

  • Finishing and treatment

What will you take away?

In addition to your new knowledge, you will leave with:

  • Your own spoon and a butter knife

  • The confidence and skill to create your own utensils

  • Connection to other likeminded learners and friends you have yet to meet.

How is the course structured?

We start our first day learning about different materials, tools and skills that will help you select the right materials to get started. You will be using these skills to carve a small wooden spoon.

Day two starts with shaping a carving your own butter knife and then will flow into different finishing options and aftercare/

What’s included?

The course fee of €380 covers tuition, the use of tools and materials, and two wholesome and nutritious daily meals each day curated by our on-site chef, as well as tea, coffee and cake when it is most needed.
