A Weekend of Willow Weaving

Embark on a two-day journey into the world of willow weaving and create two of your own handmade baskets.

 

Who is this course for?

This course will take you from complete beginner to competent weaver in just two days. If you have ever admired or treasured a woven basket and wondered how you could ever create one, this is the course for you. You can also purchase this course as a gift here.

 

What will you learn?

In this workshop, hosted by West Country Willows, participants will delve into the ancient craft of basketry, learning the intricate techniques that transform supple willow rods into two functional and beautiful baskets.

Day One: Delve into creating a versatile fruit/bread basket, discovering the art of weaving, randing, and adding finishing borders. Under the guidance of Kate and Alan, participants discover the secrets behind crafting this essential household item, honing their skills as they weave each strand with precision and creativity.

Day Two: Dive into the crafting of a shopper basket with an elegant handle, an indispensable accessory woven with love and expertise. Participants explore advanced weaving methods, perfecting their technique to construct a sturdy and stylish shopper.

 

What will you take away?

Throughout the course, Kate and Alan will be sharing their expertise and guiding attendees through every step. This immersive experience not only imparts traditional knowledge but also nurtures creativity and resourcefulness, leaving participants with not just two baskets but a deep understanding of a time-honoured craft. Join us for a transformative journey into the heart of willow weaving, where every woven strand tells a story of skill, artistry, and passion.

 

How is the course structured?

We start our first day with breakfast together. Then we kick off by learning about weaving, randing, and adding finishing borders. You will then be using these skills to create a versatile fruit or bread basket.

We start day two by learning about and creating a shopper basket with a carrier handle. We also explore advanced weaving methods and continue to hone the skills learned during the weekend.

What’s included?

The course fee of €300 covers tuition, the use of tools and materials, and two wholesome and nutritious daily meals each day curated by our on-site chef, as well as tea, coffee and cake when it is most needed. 

 

Staying with us at The Common Knowledge Centre

At The Common Knowledge Centre we now have a range of accommodation options on site to suit all budgets and needs. When you stay with us, you’ll be supporting our newly established guesthouse and be close to the action. We recommend arriving the evening before your course. More information

  • We will provide you with a loan of a hi-visibility vest for use when on-site.

    For your own safety, no loose-fitting clothing or shorts are permitted, and you should wear long sleeves when in the workshop. The following safety gear is required and mandatory to participate in the course:

    • Protective gloves*

    • Safety glasses* 

    • FFP2 Mask*

    • Goggles*

    • Ear defenders*

    You may already have many of these items or want to pick them up yourself. These items are available in our optional Site & Safety Kit which also includes a high quality measuring tape and comes in a Common Knowledge tote bag. This is available to purchase as an add on to your course ticket.
