DIY Concrete Countertops

Explore the creativity and craft behind casting concrete forms and how to design, pour and polish your own pieces.

 

Who is this course for?

If you’re looking for a way to make the polished surface kitchen of your dreams more affordable, as well as durable and practical, then this could be the course for you. Join us for a two day weekend as we delve into concrete’s history, application and environmental impact whilst exploring the creative possibilities of such a functional yet versatile building material that can be used everywhere, from floors and tiles to furniture and walls. The skills learned during the course are transferable to your future concrete casting projects, such as stool tops, benches, slabs and worktops.

 

What will you learn?

  • Concrete’s history, application and environmental impact

  • About the materials, consumables and equipment used

  • How to design, build and cast your own concrete form.

  • How to colour or stain concrete and use the correct reinforcement and aggregate

Throughout the course of the weekend we aim to arm you with a variety of transferable skills that will hopefully leave you feeling better equipped to tackle any challenges that arise in the future!

 

What will you take away?

  • The confidence and skill to create your own concrete casting projects as stool tops, benches, slabs and worktops

  • A concrete paver you have polished and sealed.

  • Your own poured concrete slab in a mould and the skills to polish it at home once it has fully cured.

  • A connection to other course participants,

 

How is the course structured?

Breakfast kicks off at 8:30am each day and lunch is at 1pm. On the first day we will focus on mould making and preparation, concrete mixing as well as dyes and aggregates and pouring your mould correctly.

On the second day you will get to work on a slab we have create for you and will focus on grinding, polishing and sealing techniques. Learning which points to stop at depending on the application.

 

What’s included?

The course fee covers tuition, the use of tools and materials, and two wholesome and nutritious daily meals each day curated by our on-site chef, as well as tea, coffee and cake when it is most needed.

 

Staying with us at The Common Knowledge Centre

At The Common Knowledge Centre we now have a range of accommodation options on site to suit all budgets and needs. When you stay with us, you’ll be supporting our newly established guesthouse and be close to the action. We recommend arriving the evening before your course. More information

  • We will provide you with a loan of a hi-visibility vest for use when on-site.

    For your own safety, no loose-fitting clothing or shorts are permitted, and you should wear long sleeves when in the workshop. The following safety gear is required and mandatory to participate in the course:

    • Waterproof gloves

    • Safety goggles

    • FFP2 Mask

    • Ear defenders

    • Measuring tape

    • Pencil

    You may already have some of these items or want to pick them up yourself. These items are available in our optional Site & Safety Kit that comes in a Common Knowledge tote bag. These are available to purchase when you arrive at Common Knowledge.
