Introduction to Furniture Design & Making

  • The Common Knowledge Centre Kilfenora V95DK38 (map)

Design and craft your own solid hardwood stool, while exploring the ergonomics, aesthetics and techniques involved in creating your own furniture.

Who is this course for?

Whether you are just curious about furniture design or have a project in mind, this course will give you the skills to design and create your own bespoke furniture for your home.

What will you learn?

On this course we will cover:

  • The physics underlying furniture design

  • Different types of wood and their attributes

  • Basic wood joinery and the skills needed to continue learning

  • Finishing techniques

What will you take away?

In addition to your new knowledge, you will leave with:

  • Your own hand-crafted hardwood stool.

  • The confidence to embark on your own furniture making projects at home, like building a bespoke bookshelf, designing and building a side table, repairing damaged furniture.

  • Connection to other likeminded learners and friends you have yet to meet.

How is the course structured?

Each day starts with breakfast at 8.30am and we eat lunch together at 1pm. We start by covering some of the basic ideas and principles behind furniture designs and making, then get a feel for the tools we will be using before beginning to create our own hardwood stools. As new materials and techniques are introduced we will discuss them throughout the two days.

What’s included?

The course fee of €380 covers tuition, the use of tools and materials, and two wholesome and nutritious daily meals each day curated by our on-site chef, as well as tea, coffee and cake when it is most needed.
