Why Build skills work for everyone

At Common Knowledge we think getting to know all about the building process is a great idea, whether you’re planning a project or build of your own or not. It’s a set of skills that brings so many benefits to you and to your wallet, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without them.

First off, imagine being able to handle minor home repairs and improvements on your own. You could build that partition wall yourself, replace that broken window pane or even put up that garden shed you’ve been dreaming of and not only will you be saving yourself money, you’ll also get the satisfaction of rolling up your sleeves and getting things done with your own two hands.

“The skills and knowledge I gained at build school played a huge part in saving me tens of thousands on my own build, it’s the best investment I’ve  ever made!'“

Even if you’re not planning on becoming a full-blown DIY expert, knowing a bit about construction can make you a smarter homeowner or renter. The next time you need to discuss a repair or a renovation with a contractor, you’ll know exactly what they’re talking about. This means you can ask the right questions, understand what’s being proposed, and make better decisions. You’ll be able to avoid getting overcharged or agreeing to unnecessary work, and that’s always a win, right?

Also, learning about the building process gives you a whole new appreciation for the spaces we live and work in. You’ll start to see the craftsmanship that goes into creating the environment you live in and not take it for granted, and you’ll also gain a deeper respect for the people who built them. Plus, it makes you more conscious of sustainability and what that actually means, you’ll start thinking about the materials and methods used in construction and how you can make choices that are better for the environment.

But it doesn’t stop there, the skills you pick up from understanding construction, like problem-solving, project management, and teamwork, are useful in all sorts of other areas whether you’re planning a big event, managing a team at work, or just trying to organise your home, these skills will come in handy everywhere and in the end will make your life a lot easier.

"If you are seeking a course that will help you demystify your home & gain confidence on how you can maintain it, then this is the course for you. You will also come away with knowledge of how you might live a more self-sufficient life & with new friends willing to help you attain it."

And let’s not forget the social aspect. Getting involved in learning about construction here will bring you into a community of like-minded people. On our Build School, you’ll meet folks who share your interest in DIY, sustainability, and hands-on learning and this doesn’t all end when you climb into the car to go home, head stuffed full of tool tips, schematics and new ideas; the chats continue over on our Commonage app; where past Build School students and members of our Common Knowledge community come together to help on projects, offer advice and/or skills to each other. We’ve seen many a mini Meitheal planned for all over the country with the continued aim of helping each other out and keep the skill-sharing and conversations going.

So, even if building a house isn’t in your plans, getting to know the building process at one of our Build Schools is a smart move. It’ll equip you with practical skills, help you make informed decisions, deepen your appreciation for your surroundings, and connect you with a community of enthusiastic learners, which really has to be a win all round.
